It’s not uncommon for your air conditioner to start blowing hot air, and the first thing you want to do is figure out why. The problem could be as simple as a low coolant level or an old filter. In this article, we will discuss all you need to know about ACs blowing hot air.

What is AC, and how does it work?

The air conditioner unit, also known simply as “the AC” or “just the “aircon,” is an electric appliance that removes heat from a certain area. A typical AC unit has three main components: the compressor (where electricity is converted into kinetic energy), the condenser (where the kinetic energy of the gas inside of it is converted back to electricity), and the evaporator (where gas is converted into a liquid so that it can absorb heat from your room).

All of these components are connected by pipes. When you turn on the AC, the compressor uses an electric motor to spin a special kind of pump that pushes a non-reactive gas through the condenser. The condenser has thin metal fins that help dissipate the heat of the gas. The fan on your unit cools these fins by blowing air past them and then blows air across its face into your room or area. This cooled air is blown over the evaporator’s coils and causes the liquid inside of it to turn back into a gas, absorbing heat from your room in the process. The AC unit then blows this cool gas out into the room through vents where it is blown across the fan blades again and is evaporated back into a liquid by the hot coils of the evaporator before being pumped back to the compressor.

Why do AC units blow hot air sometimes?

During normal operation, the pump of the AC unit has to continually cool the compressor so that it doesn’t overheat and break. It is common for new units, or units that have been operated on hot days for a long time, to blow hot air while they do this because they are still cooling themselves down. This should be remedied within about 30 minutes, and you should then have cold air coming from your unit.

If you let the over-heating and subsequent hot air blowing continue, this will damage your AC unit and cause malfunctions with other parts in the near future. If you fix it, you can avoid this, though.

    Why professional help is important?

AC units are dangerous appliances to fix without proper training. AC unit repair can be very dangerous if you do not know what you’re doing because there are chemicals inside of it that can be harmful, even deadly when combined together in the right way, which your untrained eye might mistake for something else. If your AC is blowing hot air, you should have it checked by a professional to ensure that you are safe.

If your AC is blowing hot air, it’s time to get on top of the problem.
